Orange Beard Contest Call for Submissions

We happily invite you to submit to our Orange Beard contest! Last Fall, Frey Vineyards released our first organic orange wine. We decided to call it it “Orange Beard” to celebrate the orange that several Frey men have in their beards. We’re really excited about this year’s vintage, our second release of “Orange Beard,” and to celebrate our newest orange wine, we’re hosting a contest.

Starting in the month of October, we’re calling for submissions of “orange beards.” You may post as many entries as you like! To enter the Orange Beard contest: post a picture of your best orange beard (real or created) with a bottle of Frey Organic Orange Beard, tag us on the post, and tag us in a story. Then, we'll choose our top three favorites each month for October, November, and December. If chosen, you'll win an Orange Beard t-shirt!

Our newest vintage of Orange Beard brings beguiling aromas of frangipani and sea salt. On the sip, elegant flavors of cream sherry open the palate with heat and depth, pulling intricate dried orange peel notes on the finish. Serve just below room temperature to be enraptured by all its nuances. Orange Beard is an excellent choice for a cocktail wine, or lighter, grazing fare like a charcuterie or fruit and cheese board. It’s a great wine to enjoy sooner than later; in the “drink now” category, this orange wine is best at its young and fresh stage.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with orange wines, they perform alchemical magic by fermenting white grapes on the skins, stems, and seeds of the grapes. Much like the process of fermenting red wine, skin-contact wines or orange wines possess the texture and tannins common to red wine, and the grape skins impart a deeper, naturally occurring orange/amber hue.

Because orange wines are relatively new to the USA wine market, we’re having fun educating and entertaining at the same time. Orange wines are actually very, very old, dating back thousands of years! However, we want you to try our take on an orange wine, produced using our organic grapes and organic winemaking methods. You can order a bottle of our new vintage in our online wine shop!

Inspiration

The initial label sketch for the Orange Beard label evolved on a late night in a tiny candle-lit wine bar in Barcelona, surrounded by artists, adventurers, sailors, and revolutionaries, and pays tribute to the WWII-era doodle/meme, “Kilroy was here.” The orange beard twist adds a unique Frey flavor to our debut orange wine! Kudos to our label designer Nicole Martenson for her wonderful graphics for Frey Vineyards!
