Mamavation

Leah Segedie of Mamavation

We’re excited to partner with Mamavation! For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure yet, allow us to introduce Mamavation. Eco-wellness product crusader, Leah Segedie decided to start researching how to live healthier for herself and her family after a health crisis brought on by the toxic chemicals in our food, household products, and environment. She turned the tide by starting to research and test what levels of toxins can be found lurking in our daily routines. And, by way of this testing, she was able to discern, using empirical science, what products are healthy, non-toxic, and supportive of health and well-being.

If it’s toxic, we’ll find it, and put it on the naughty list!
— Leah Segedie of Mamavation

Because Leah reported the facts, she has been treated by big chemical companies as enemy number one. Despite being targeted for her activism, she has created and facilitates a large and supportive community of (especially) moms concerned for their families health. As a mom blogger, she has blown the whistle on products that are testing positive for the PFA forever chemicals, heavy metals, and other toxins that are known to be problematic.

We are excited to partner with Leah of Mamavation because we share different but similar paths. When Katrina and Jonathan started Frey Vineyards growing organic grapes, there was no organic wine certification. Through their efforts, they’ve helped shape policy and guidelines to ensure that the USDA “organic” symbol on all of our wines really means something. While we are in the wine industry and Leah is a mom blogger, we converge on the topic of how to have purity in the products that we use. While we shaped the face of the organic wine industry as a pioneer, Leah has used Mamavation to forge conscious consumer conversations about what is safe across many industries.

While many companies market themselves as “green” businesses and their products as “natural,” her third-party lab test investigations confirm or deny claims with real data. To support optimal development for growing humans in particular, Leah tests all kinds of products for the presence of noxious chemicals. For food and drink products in particular, she’s especially looking for glyphosate. Infamously known as an herbicide, this product unfortunately shows up in places where it hasn’t been sprayed because of its persistence in the ecosystem. Without going down that toxic rabbit hole too far, glyphosate has a very, very bad reputation for very good reasons. For those of you who aren’t familiar with glyphosate’s toxicity, it’s quickly becoming more scrutinized by the scientific community.

Mamavation’s team checks companies making environmentally-friendly claims with empirical data. Then, when she gets products tested in a lab, she reports the results to her community. And, because she’s a mom blogger, and moms sometimes enjoy a glass of wine, she wants to have suggestions for what wines to offer her community.

Mamavation tested the Frey Cabs

That’s where we come in. As America’s first Organic and first Biodynamic winery, Leah had heard of Frey and enjoyed our wine over the years. We connected earlier this year, and she asked if she could send some of our bottles to the lab for glyphosate testing. We agreed, sent her three of our wines. Our Organic Cabernet Sauvignon, our Biodynamic Cabernet Sauvignon, and our Organic Sun and Rain Chardonnay. We are happy to report that no glyphosates were detected in any bottle!

Mamavation tested our Sun & Rain Organic Chardonnay

While we have NEVER sprayed anything with glyphosate anywhere on our home ranch, there are sometimes small traces of glyphosate (up to 10 parts per billion) found in organically grown products because we live in an earth bubble, and the water cycle moves things around. As a result, the standard for organics is actually anything under a tiny threshold to account for this unfortunate effect. However, we are extremely grateful that we have been able to both pass the test with flying colors AND be recommended as a clean wine to drink by Mamavation! Cheers!
