Grazing the Vineyards

The incorporation of livestock is an essential part of any Biodynamic farm.  At our certified Biodynamic estate vineyards we rotate a flock of mixed breed sheep through ten-acre vineyard plots during the lambing season each spring.  The sheep benefit both the soil and the vines by leaving valuable manure which helps the fertilization of the vineyards. They also reduce the need for mechanical mowing by grazing the early spring cover crop. Eating the fresh cover-crop greens provides important nutrition for the lactating ewes and weaning lambs. All of which is mutually beneficial to both vineyards and sheep, and essential to Biodynamic grape growing.

Our flock is managed by local shepherd Adam Gaska and his loyal Great Pyrenees guard dog Alexander.  We have 40 ewes and three rams. Each ewe has one or two babies each year.  The flocks’ mixed heritage includes Ramboulet, Scheviot, Suffolk, Dorsett, Merino and Southdown breeds.
